Freedom Monument Sculpture Park (part of Legacy Museum)

Definetly would recommend everyone to go, see and educate themselves. Beautifully put together and well maintained. Not only educational, but a beautiful memorialization for the enslaved and trafficked. Definitely was a meaningful trip. Be sure to check out the other Legacy sites too, such as the Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice. No pictures are allowed in the Legacy Museum, and only at designated areas at the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park.

Perfect for school field trips! First week of school combined both Art and American History - we visited EJI Freedom Monument Sculpture Park to learn more about the history of slavery in America and it's lasting effects. Absolutely take advantage of the FREE boat ride! The voice over on the trip also was an added touch. The sculptures (which cannot be photographed) are stunning, and the story is so well told. I so appreciate that we have the opportunity to visit the EJI world class museums. This sculpture park was the perfect level of engagement for my younger kids. The National Monument to Freedom (the red wall) features the surnames - many they chose themselves- of over 400,000 freed slaved collected from the next census records. Loved that the kids had the opportunity to lay a remembrance flower in the channel that surrounds it. ⚘️ I so appreciate when Historic monuments offer hands-on ways for kids to connect to history.

Another must-see in Montgomery. This outdoor sculpture garden tells the story of slavery of African Americans and indigenous people in the United States. Beautiful sculptures. The Freedom Monument itself is immense and contains all of the surnames formerly enslaved people took for the 1870 census. 122,000 names. They have an app so you can find a specific name on the wall. There is also a place in the visitors center where you can see which states people with each name came from. This memorial is one of a set of three, the others are the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and The Legacy Museum. The $5 admission gets you into all three and includes shuttle and boat rides between. We shuttled to the boat from the Peace and Justice Memorial and rode the boat to the Sculpture Park. It was a very nice ride on a hot day and the river is beautiful.

You have to experience this magnificent place. Every sculpture, every panel and every location was so creatively put to together by the most talented artist. I was so impressed.

This site is truly a must-visit and was one of the most memorable stops on my tour of historic locations in Alabama. The park’s ambiance is thoughtfully designed, contributing significantly to the overall experience. Located on the river that historically brought enslaved individuals into the city and near the train tracks used for transportation, the site holds a profound, almost sacred, significance. The exhibits are deeply personal and emotionally impactful. I visited before the official opening, and at that time, entry was strictly controlled with tickets available only online. While this procedure may have changed, I recommend checking in advance and securing your timed entry tickets ahead of time, even on weekdays. A complimentary shuttle service connects the Sculpture Park with the nearby Legacy Museum, both of which are essential visits. Parking is ample at the Park, but remember that the entire experience is outdoors, so be sure to bring bug spray, sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes. Note that photography is not permitted inside the Park.

Stunning, incredible! The freedom monument sculpture Park is unreal. You can’t take pictures in there otherwise I would post some. Definitely worth the trip. We had an excellent pontoon boat ride over to the sculpture park, which is on the site of a slave warehouse.

The history was awesome and everything is so arranged and organized. Lots of history so if you get a chance please go.

A must-see exhibit of sculptures. We took the boat here, but the shuttle or driving your own car are other good ways to go. The sculptures were just fantastic. And there was a lot of information in general about civil rights.
