Catholic Cemetery

Beautiful, older Catholic Cemetery established in 1848. It is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm. There are several famous people buried here. The front of the cemetery is very old, so some of the markers are historic, some are damaged by time & storms over the year. I come here and take photos. There are a few famous people buried here, like Tommie Aaron, Admiral Raphael Semmes of the Confederate Navy, Lil Greenwood, & many others.

I’m a lifelong Catholic, but sadly I could never have any of my family buried at Catholic Cemetery. It is in a horrible area of town and in my opinion can be unsafe to visit, especially alone. While there are many beautiful old monuments, the cemetery overall is poorly maintained, with many grave sites damaged. Local news recently did a story where visitors found exposed skeletal remains at a damaged gravesite. Disgraceful. Not sure if the cemetery charges for or has a trust fund for perpetual care, but if they do, you’d never know it. Sad indeed, as there is a lot of history here.

It's in a bad neighborhood, but my grandfather, whom I never had the fortune of meeting, is buried here. I always feel like he is watching over me whenever I come to put flowers on his grave.

Very overgrown with trash everywhere. It’s heartbreaking to see how forgotten and unloved these graves are, especially the ones in the back.

Disgraceful and disrespectful for the individuals buried here and their families!
